Workshop Model
The workshop model for writing is taken from the Writing Unit of Study program developed at Teacher’s College at Columbia University.
Writing Workshop
Students are explicitly taught a specific writing skill during a whole group mini-lesson. The teacher uses mentor texts to model what good writing looks like. Individual writing conferences are held to help students develop their skills as writers. This workshop model teaches students how to develop their own topics through the use of the Tiny Topics Writer’s Notebook. Students use them to jot down writing ideas to use in class. The Writing Units of Study program focuses on four types of writing: narrative, informational, opinion, and poetry.
