District 97’s math program is Eureka Math. It is based on the four Common Core State Standards:
Fluency Practice
Eureka Math begins each lesson with fluency (warm up) activities that can be oral, completed using a personal white board, and/or Sprints (60 minute timed tests) that review the previous day’s strategies. They are two-sided (sides A and B). Students compete against themselves trying to improve the number correct. Students check their own answers and record the number of additional correct answers at the top of side B.
Application Problem
There is a story problem of the day called the Application Problem that builds upon previous strategies. They are done together in class.
Lesson and Debrief
The actual lesson is then taught and there is a short Debrief session that goes over the practice problems.
Exit Tickets
An Exit Ticket is given at the end of the day. It is a short assessment that tells the teacher which students understood the day’s lesson and which students need more help. Those students needing more help can be pulled the next day into a small group and given additional instruction.
Assessments
Students take a mid-module and end-of-module assessment for each unit.
Parent Support
Eureka Math offers videos, parent newsletters and tips for parents. By clicking here you can access this important information. It is organized by unit then lesson and is easy to navigate. There are also parent tips listed below for you to reference.
